Safety Tips

With the promise of summer comes more time spent near and in the water. Here are some tips to keep your family safe while enjoying all types of water activities.

American Red Cross’s Water Safety Resources
The American Red Cross believes that consumers who improve water competency, which includes swimming skills and water smarts, can make water activities safer … and just as much fun. Find swim classes, learn how to make water safety a priority, know what to do in an emergency and understand why you should embrace water safety.

International Swimming Hall of Fame’s Water Safety E-Program
One of the missions of the International Swimming Hall of Fame is to promote water safety in all aquatic environments and activities. To meet this goal, the association provides a water safety e-program. Take and pass each module—from drowning prevention and rescue to water safety in pools—by successfully answering questions and print your certificate of accomplishment.

Home Pool Essentials Course
The Home Pool Essentials course was developed by the American Red Cross and the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance to teach home pool owners the basics of pool, spa and hot tub maintenance, as well as strategies for creating a safer pool environment. This course is ideal for home pool, spa, and hot tub owners, in addition to home inspectors, parents, and other health advocates.

Pool Safety’s Free Educational Materials
Pool Safely offers a variety of educational materials—from posters to videos for adults and children—that can help you easily share water safety information, whether it’s with friends and neighbors or at public pools.

The American Red Cross Free Swim App
Get the most out of your American Red Cross swim lessons with the American Red Cross Swim App, which was created as a companion to the Learn-to-Swim program. The app is designed to keep the swimmer motivated while providing the latest in water safety guidelines to ensure the swimmer’s well-being in and near water.

Step Into Swim
Learning to swim means much more than learning strokes; it is learning water survival skills, water safety, and developing comfort in the water.

Water safety is about having an educated respect for the water, including an understanding of the layers of protection needed to keep ourselves and our loved ones safer when in, on, and around water. Since 2012, Step Into Swim™ has supported thousands of swim lessons across the globe and played a role in reducing swimming fatalities through this program.  The Step Into Swim™ Campaign is a 10-year initiative to create 1 million more swimmers.
